5 Tips For Providing Self-Concept Building In Your Teen – Parenting Teens Tips

Parenting Teens with Love and Logic is one of my favorite books of all time for working with Parents of teenagers.  The information below is adopted from this book and is one of the many snippets of priceless information contained in the book.

Teens look to us for positive and negative affirmations and they store them in their memory banks.  The perceptions gained from these parental messages actually become their reality.  Here are some tips on raising the odds of success as we exercise our responsibility to build the self-concept of our teens.

  1. Provide both stated and unstated messages that show you have unconditional love.
  2. Model your own healthy self-concept to your teens by taking care of yourself as much as you take care of them.
  3. Provide both stated and unstated messages that say “I value you.”
  4. Provide both stated and unstated messaged that say “You have control”.
  5. Provide opportunities for teens to struggle through and own their decisions and responsibilities.

Have you ever felt lost when it comes to parenting your teenager?  Do your son’s or daughter’s actions and behaviors seem off course in relation to your understanding?  The adolescent years are filled with the anticipation and excitement of a new journey ahead, but oftentimes we encounter detours and delays on our route.  Navigating through these years takes grace and patience, but our frustrations in the moment prevent us from seeing the joy in the journey.   Within this course, parents will be taught specific tools and techniques to connect better with their teenager son or daughter.  Information from top research-based programs such as Love and Logic, The Gottman Relationship Institute and Dr. Gary Chapman will be taught and discussed in detail.  There will be four main areas covered during this class: (1) Parenting Styles; (2) Behavior Management Techniques; (3) Communication & Conflict Management; and (4) How to Connect with Your Teenager.   Sarah Houy, a professional counselor with Live Well Counseling Services, will teach this 4-week class.  Classes will be held at the Littleton Campus on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm.  The class dates will be held on March 11th, 18th, April 1st, & 8th.   The cost is $35 per person or $50 per couple.
